Song Li is a professor in the School of Plant and Environmental Sciences at Virginia Tech and affiliate faculty at the Sanghani Center. He received a Ph.D. in bioinformatics and genomics from Pennsylvania State University, and a B.S. in biotechnology from Peking University.
His research interests include single-cell sequencing data analysis in plants using machine learning and AI; early disease detection using metagenomic sequencing; and high-throughput phenotyping using hyperspectral imaging.
Li's teaching interests are in advanced computational methods for genomic data processing; machine learning in genomics and phenotyping; and data management in genomics and agriculture. Li has been a lead PI for $6.8 million in external grants and has published 29 peer-reviewed articles.
His long-term goal is to be at the forefront of applying AI and data science in basic plant research and modern data-driven agricultural systems.
