Edward Fox
Edward Fox is a professor in the Department of Computer Science at Virginia Tech. He teaches courses including Information Retrieval; Multimedia, Hypertext, and Information Access; Digital Libraries; and Computational Linguistics. He directs Virginia Tech’s Digital Library Research Laboratory and the Networked Digital Library of Theses and Dissertations.
He works broadly on all aspects of Information, including theory, algorithms, systems, experimental studies, Web, social networks, natural language processing, and user interaction/usability.
He was chair of the IEEE Technical Committee on Digital Libraries, and earlier was chair of ACM SIGIR. He was also chair of the steering committee for JCDL and serves on the international advisory committee for ICADL, two conferences on digital libraries. In 2017 he was named a Fellow of each of IEEE and ACM, for leadership and contributions in information retrieval and digital libraries. Virginia Tech awarded him the university’s XCaliber Award in 2016 for technology enriched learning. He has been (co-)principal investigator on 137 research grants/contracts. He has taught over 87 tutorials and has given 68 keynote/distinguished/ international invited talks. He has (co-) authored 19 books; 136 journal/magazine articles; 49 book chapters; 245 refereed conference/workshop papers; 78 posters; and over 160 other publications/reports, and has given more than 350 additional talks. He received a Ph.D. and M.S. in computer science from Cornell University and a B.S. from M.I.T.
