Song Li

Song Li headshot

Song Li is an associate professor in the School of Plant and Environmental Sciences at Virginia Tech and affiliate faculty at the Sanghani Center. He received a Ph.D. in bioinformatics and genomics from Pennsylvania State University, and a B.S. in biotechnology from Peking University.

His research interests include single-cell sequencing data analysis in plants using machine learning and AI; early disease detection using metagenomic sequencing; and high-throughput phenotyping using hyperspectral imaging.

Li's teaching interests are in advanced computational methods for genomic data processing; machine learning in genomics and phenotyping; and data management in genomics and agriculture. Li has been a lead PI for $6.8 million in external grants and has published 29 peer-reviewed articles.

His long-term goal is to be at the forefront of applying AI and data science in basic plant research and modern data-driven agricultural systems.
