Sampanna Kahu

Sampanna Kahu was a master’s degree student in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. His advisor was Edward Fox. Kahu’s research focus is to develop methods for effectively extracting figures and tables from scanned Electronic Theses and Dissertations (ETDs), thereby making their downstream usage easier.

Aarohi Sumant

Aarohi Sumant was a master’s degree student in the Department of Computer Science.  She was advised by Edward Fox. Her research interests are around machine learning, specifically natural language processing and data science.

Hongjie Chen

Hongjie Chen was a Ph.D. student in the Department of Computer Science.  His advisor was Hoda Eldardiry. His research lies in the areas of graph neural networks, time-series analysis, and recommendation systems.

Three funded fellows earn UrbComp graduate certificate this spring

Three funded UrbComp fellows, Stacey Clifton, Michelle Dowling, and Moeti Masiane, earned the graduate certificate in urban computing this spring. The certificate is offered through the National Science Foundation-sponsored multidisciplinary UrbComp Program administered by the Discovery Analytics Center.

Milad Afzalan was a master’s degree student in the Department of Computer Science. His advisor was Hoda Eldardiry. He simultaneously received a Ph.D. in civil engineering from Virginia Tech.  Afzalan’s research interests are machine learning, pattern recognition, smart grid, and energy efficiency.
